What is an SSL Certificate?
The full name of SSL is Secure Sockets Layer. Which creates a secure connection between the users’ browser and the server and keeps the encrypted information (credit card details, banking details, and login details) between the user and the browser encrypted and private. Simply SSL prevents the user’s personal information from being passed into the hands of hackers and middlemen. Currently, TLS (Transport Layer Security) is an updated and more secure version of SSL. The final version of TLS is TLS 1.3, which was released in August 2018.
Types of SSL Certificates-:
1. Domain Validation (DV)-:
It is the cheapest SSL certificate and perfect for a blog. You can achieve this in a few minutes or hours. This is best for websites that do not require additional security. it’s cheap and can be obtained in a few minutes or hours. This type of SSL certificate is Best for blogs and small websites. Major Hosting provider provides this type of free SSL certificate with their Plan. You can read my post list of Hosting Provider provides free SSL certificate.
2. Organization Validation (OV)-:
Domain Validation provides better security than a certificate. A domain-validated certificate (DV) is an X.509 digital certificate typically used for Transport Layer Security (TLS) where the domain name of the applicant is validated by proving some control over a DNS domain. Domain validated certificates were first distributed by GeoTrust in 2002 before becoming a widely accepted method.
3. Extended Validation (EV)-:
Extended Validation Certificate is very important on a website with Transaction. It displays a padlock with the business name in the URL. you may have seen this Padlock on Banking website. Domain Validation and Organization Validation certificates are easy to obtain, while Extended Validation (EV) requires a strict authentication process. It takes about 7-10 days to activate. Most Banking and e-commerce websites use EV certificates.
An Extended Validation Certificate (EV) is a certificate conforming to X.509 that proves the legal entity of the owner and is signed by a certificate authority key that can issue EV certificates. EV certificates can be used in the same manner as any other X.509 certificates, including securing web communications with HTTPS and signing software and documents. Unlike domain-validated certificates and organization-validation certificates, EV certificates can be issued only by a subset of certificate authorities (CAs) and require verification of the requesting entity’s legal identity before certificate issuance.
4. SAN / Multi-domain SSL-:
Single Multi-domain SSL certificate secures multiple domains. It can secure up to 100 domains with a single certificate. You can achieve this with Domain Validation, Organization Validation and Extended Validation.
The multi-domain certificate is also commonly referred to as a SAN certificate. SAN is short for Subject Alternative Name. In a multi-domain certificate, it is a field that allows you to attach additional host names to one SSL certificate. These host names can be anything from IP addresses to URLS but are most commonly DNS (domain name system) names.
When a user tries to access a website protected by a multi-domain/SAN certificate, the browser will check the certificate to see if the URL matches one of the SAN names contained within. If it does, a secure connection to the server will be established.
5. Wildcard SSL-:
It secures your domain and unlimited sub-domains with a single certificate. It is available with Domain Validation (DV) and Organization Validation (OV).In computer networking, a wildcard certificate is a public key certificate which can be used with multiple subdomains of a domain. The principal use is for securing web sites with HTTPS, but there are also applications in many other fields. Compared with conventional certificates, a wildcard certificate can be cheaper and more convenient than a certificate for each sub-domain. Multi-domain Wildcard certificates further simplify the complexity and reduce costs by securing multiple domains and their sub-domains.
6. Multi-domain SSL Certificate-:
This type of certificate secures unlimited sub-domains with multiple domain names. You can achieve this with Domain Validation (DV) and Organization Validation (OV). A Multi-Domain SSL certificate can secure your main domain along with several SANs (Subject Alternative Names) domain names in one certificate. Multi-Domain certificates are often used for Unified Communications (UC) to secure Microsoft Exchange 2010 Server, Office Communications Server 2007 or Mobile Device Manager.
7. Unified Communications Certificate (UCC)-:
Unified Communications Certificate (UCC) is specifically designed to secure Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft Office Communications Server. It works like a Multi Domain SSL certificate and secures 100 domains using a single certificate. A Unified Communication Certificate (or UCC) is a digital security certificate which allows multiple hostnames to be protected by a single certificate. UC certificates are also known as Subject Alternate Name (or SAN) certificates, multi-domain certificates or Exchange certificates.

Why you should buy an SSL Certificate for your site-:
There are several reasons for purchasing SSL Certificate:
1. Security Improvement-:
SSL creates an encrypted connection between the user and the web server and the data is sent to the server in the form of code. Which is very difficult to decrypt but when you enter your data on Non-HTTPS (without SSL install website), that data is sent as plain text to the server which is easy to read and hack. It help to gain the trust of the user. A SSL certificate also boost your search engine ranking because Google list a website higher in the search result which is secure with SSL certificate.
2. Improves Visitors’ Trust-:
If you use an SSL Certificate on your site, your website URL appears in the address bar of the browser with a security padlock. This shows that your site is secure and takes the visitor’s privacy seriously so visitors will trust your site and never hesitate to do financial transaction on your website if you are selling any product or services.
3. Website performs better in SERPs-:
SSL / HTTPS is a Ranking signal. When Google ranks a page, it uses SSL / HTTPS as the ranking factor so if you use SSL / HTTPS on your site, your website will rank better in Google search.
4. Chrome Warnings-:
As of July 24th, 2018 Chrome 68 and higher versions are showing all non-HTTPS sites as “Not Secure”. Therefore, purchasing SSL Certificate becomes even more important. If Google Chrome shows warning on your website then no user will bypass security and visit your website.
